Can I Eat Sugar When I Have Cancer? with Jeanette Kovtun, MD – Ochsner Doctor’s Note

One myth I think that comes up pretty
often: when I show patients their PET scans. I describe how PET scans are done
and PET scans take advantage of highly growing metabolically active cancer
cells and they use a lot of sugar molecules that we can actually visualize
on the imaging. So, a lot of questions come from that being concerned that well,
cancer’s metabolically active using sugar. “Should I not have sugar? Is this bad for
me? Is this going to make my cancer grow?” So it’s a almost every time I show
someone a PET scan and describe how it works, I get this question I I have to
dispel that that myth that yes, you can have sugar a balanced healthy diet is
always recommended, but saying that you can’t have any sugar is certainly
not true.
