Diabetic heart disease: advancements you should know about

So, I think the main advances that have been
made in heart disease treatment for patients with diabetes are the discovery of two different
classes of drugs which seem to improve survival quite considerably. And these are important
because we’ve had evidence that if you improve blood sugar control, you actually reduce the
risk of eye disease, kidney disease, foot complications, for example, but they had only
a tiny effect on heart disease in people with diabetes compared to cholesterol and blood
pressure reduction. You need to do all of these. But a couple of new treatments, one’s
called an SGLT2 inhibitor and the other one’s called a GLP-1 agonist – the latter is an
injection – these seem to reduce the risk of heart failure, reduce risk of dying by about
thirty five percent. And particularly for the GLP-1 agonist, those drugs
seem to also reduce heart attacks and strokes. So that’s been a real game-changer in the management
of diabetes together with providing weight loss and fewer complications as well
like low blood sugar levels. So it’s a really good treatment.
