Key Symptom of Heart Disease – LewisGale Regional Health System

(gentle music) – If you have chest pain like
we’re saying with exertion, so let’s say you’re hiking up a mountain, you start having chest pain,
and it’s relieved with rest, I would recommend calling
your doctor right away and seeing if you can
schedule an appointment. The key, though, is if
the pain does not go away or it starts to get worse. Then you have to call 911,
because that’s something that could be life-threatening
at that point. But if it is something that’s
some light chest tightness, I wouldn’t advise waiting, ’cause sometimes some people don’t have the same pain level as other people. Sometimes if they have diabetes, they can have just a mild chest pressure. But I wouldn’t wait, I’d
call your doctor right away. – That’s an important point. Many people with severe coronary disease have no chest pain whatsoever. – Right.
– None. Because remember, the
heart has no pain sensors. The heart is not exposed
to the outside environment, so it has no need for any pain sensors. The pain that people feel
from a heart attack is from inflammation and it’s
from nerves that are going to other parts of the
body that become activated when the heart muscle begins to have insufficient blood flow. – At the same time, some people miss it because it does run in their families and they have smoke
and they have diabetes. They can be very young. I mean, hey can be in their 30s, and they come in and it’s missed because they think, well, I’m only 32. I don’t have heart disease. And even sometimes it’s
missed by their family doctor because they’re so young. And sometimes it is a symptom like midepigastric and they
think it’s indigestion. ‘Cause a lot of patients are very active and they’re very healthy and they’ll come in and they’ll say, “Well, how can I possibly
have a problem with my heart? “I ride my bike every day.” I say, well, if you didn’t
ride your bike every day, you would have been here five years ago. So it is a good thing, I said, but a lot of times people,
it’s not really denial, it’s just that it’s something
they’re not considering that it could be heart disease.
