Meet Coburn Allen, MD, Pediatric Infectious Diseases | Ascension Texas

Hello. My name is Coburn Allen. I’m a pediatric infectious disease and pediatric
emergency medicine specialist. I chose to go into healthcare because, at
a very young age, I had a brother that got quite sick with a trauma, and I was really
interested in the fact that they were able to save his life, and ultimately, started
to get to know my pediatrician not just because I had frequent illnesses, I had strep throat
a lot, but I also just recognized that he had a really cool job. He got to work with kids. He got to enjoy the mystery of the new diagnosis,
and that really fascinated me. So, I think I recognized as a four-year-old,
I wanted to be a pediatrician. As a pediatrician, if you can’t listen to
your parents, you really are left handicapped in trying to figure out what’s going on, so
a really important part of what I train my trainees here, as the fellowship director
in the emergency room, is you really need to count on a good history to get you on the
right target for what you need to do for that child, and you need to give the families enough
time to tell the whole story, what’s going on, and you also need to recognize what important
key questions haven’t been asked, and asked those things. So, so much of what we do is based on pattern
recognition, and if you don’t know the right questions to ask, sometimes the parents don’t
know the right things to say. So, one of the things that really attracted
me to Dell Children’s, and one of the reasons I left Houston to come here, was there is
a true passion to take care of everybody, and not just paying customers, or not just
one part of town. It’s really all about taking care of the whole
community, and I love the fact that it doesn’t matter what I think a child needs. They’re going to get that care when they come
to Dell Children’s.
