Hello, my name is Till Bachmann. I’m the programme director for the online MSc in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. I’m very happy that you came to learn more about the programme. The University of Edinburgh is world-renowned for its Medical School and for training its students to become leading doctors, world class researchers and global innovators. Here at the Edinburgh Medical School and at the Deanery of Biomedical Sciences, we have a growing number of online distance learning programmes, which are open to students anywhere in the world. The MSc in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases is one of these. It is a part time online distance learning programme over three years. It sits thematically at the interface of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases, as well as medicine and biomedical research. This programme offers you the opportunity to study towards a valuable masters degree from one of the top universities in the world. We designed the programme with your training and professional development aspirations in mind. To do this, we drew on British medical curriculum for combined infection training and relevant speciality training of the Royal College of Pathologists and joint Royal College of Physicians training board. Our programme is ideal for junior doctors who wish to specialise in infectious diseases or clinical microbiology. It is also an excellent opportunity to advance knowledge and skills for many professionals, such as biomedical scientists, researchers, educators and healthcare professionals. The programme content is fully delivered online via a virtual learning environment called Blackboard Learn. You can decide how to best organise your studying to fit in your busy schedule. After thorough induction and training in generic skills for online learning, you will listen and interact with talks by our team of sixteen University of Edinburgh academics and twenty clinicians. To make this a most effective and pleasant experience, we use a user interface called Storyline. You also have full access to all online library resources of the University of Edinburgh. This provides you with a fantastic framework to contribute to discussion boards and written assignments. On selected occasions, you will have live discussions with our team. Beyond this, every student has a personal tutor who is there to give pastoral guidance to ensure that you have the best academic experience possible. You can request to meet your personal tutor online at any point during your studies. Our current students come from a diversity of professions such as junior doctors, biomedical scientists, pharmacists, public health professionals, biomedical researchers, scientific officers, medical laboratory scientists and educators. We have a truly global student community, with current students based in the UK, Africa, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and North America. Our students learn from the presentations and interactions with our academic and medical tutors, as well as other materials including the library resources made available to them. To make things easier for you we will give guidance to the library by providing curated resources. A major part of the learning is by engaging with your fellow students. This will be done via discussion boards where you will discuss and develop clinical and research questions relevant to the specific courses. The feedback we get from our students tells us that this is a very important factor to them. As a priority, our students want to deepen and compliment their knowledge in clinical microbiology and infectious dieases. They enrol in the programme to advance in their careers or even prepare for very specific exams. Beyond the fundamental knowledge gain, our aim is to enable our students to develop and critically assess cutting edge research questions in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. This will qualify them to oversee and develop their own research programmes, and give them the desired input for their career. We are very proud of our programme and would like to invite you to try it out. To do this, please click on the links provided in the video description. It will take you to more details on the course and tasters from lectures. There are also links in the Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases programme page, and information on how to apply. We are constantly evolving our programme to offer our students the best and most rewarding experience possible. If you have more specific questions please do get in touch. We look forward to your application and hope to see you soon online.
