Taking on Nicaragua’s #1 Cancer Killer

My name is Susan Cotton. I am co-founder and executive
chair of The Lily Project. [Susan Cotton,
The Lily Project] The Lily Project operates
mobile women’s health clinics in rural
communities in Nicaragua. We provide cervical
cancer screening and treatment, as well as
sexual health education for both women and girls. ♪ guitar ♪ 90% of cervical
cancer occurs in these low-resource countries which lack access to health. We have saved
almost 1,000 lives. When I started
to move into my 50s, all of a sudden I realized that I really wanted
to actually contribute differently to the world. I decided to go back and get a Master’s in
Social Entrepreneurship at Pepperdine University. And part of what
they ask you to do is explore a cultural issue from the
culture’s point of view. [Jonathan Butcher Co-Founder,

Anielka and I were working in the community
in Nicaragua, and I heard about the story
of her mother passing away from cervical cancer
at such a young age. She and I together said there was something
we had to do about it. We met Susan
through Pepperdine. She was looking for a program
that focused on women’s health and rights. Susan came into our lives and turned this
dream into a reality. [Blank Line]>>(Susan): The goal
of The Lily Project over the next
three to five years is to operate ten
mobile health clinics throughout
rural Nicaragua. With ten teams, we’ll be impacting
30,000 women a year, and we will actually be able to
make a meaningful difference in the trend of the
disease in Nicaragua. [Anielka Medina,

I love Susan and she loves
the people in Nicaragua. ♪ music playing ♪>>(Susan): My purpose has
actually become stronger. What I better understand now
that I didn’t understand then was that it doesn’t
take much to do a lot. An improvement to one
person becomes 20 people, which becomes 2,000 people. So, if anything,
just starting this has strengthened my belief
and ability to have purpose to actually change
