Two Calhoun County schools to test for tuberculosis after student becomes sick


A STUDENT IN CALHOUN COUNTY IS
SICK WITH TUBERCULOSIS, AND
TOMORROW ALL CLASSMATES WILL
UNDERGO TESTING FOR THE DEADLY
DISEASE. WVTM 13’S ERIN KELLY WAS THERE
AS WORRIED PARENTS TOOK THEIR
QUESTIONS TO HEALTH OFFICIALS. REPORTER: SOME WERE UPSET THEY
DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THIS SOONER. ONE CAME TO ASK QUESTIONS, WITH
A MASK ON, SAYING HE DIDN’T WANT
TO CARRY THE DISEASE HOME. CLASS –>>THEY’VE KNOWN ABOUT
IT SINCE THE 13TH BUT OUR KIDS
ARE STILL GOING TO SCHOOL AND
WE’RE JUST NOW FINDING OUT ABOUT
IT TODAY. VERY UPSET. YOU COULD AT LEAST LET US KNOW
SOMETHING.>>I THOUGHT IT WAS 1920, BUT I
MEAN, YOU JUST DO WHAT YOU CAN
DO, I GUESS. I MEAN I DIDN’T FREAK OUT OR
ANYTHING. REPORTER: A WEEK AGO, STATE
HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THEY TOLD
WALTER WELLBORN ELEMENTARY AND
HIGH SCHOOLS THEY’D LEARNED A
STUDENT WAS SICK WITH
TUBERCULOSIS. SO TOMORROW ALL STUDENTS AND
FACULTY WILL GET A SKIN TEST TO
RULE OUT ANY FORM OF TB, ACTIVE
OR DORMANT. HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THEY WAITED
TO TELL THE PUBLIC SO THEY COULD
HAVE AN ORGANIZED RESPONSE, AND
WAITING DID NOT PUT ANYONE AT
RISK.>>WHEN WE CAN CONTROL THE
SITUATION, WE KNOW EVERYONE’S
BEEN TESTED. WE’RE NOT MISSING PEOPLE, AND
THERE’S JUST NO REAL REASON TO
GO TO THE PRIVATE DOCTOR WHEN
YOU CAN GET IT AT SCHOOL. REPORTER: PEOPLE WITH ACTIVE TB
MAY HAVE RAPID WEIGHT LOSS,
NIGHT SWEATS, OR COUGH UP BLOOD. HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY ONLY
SOMEONE WHO HAS AN ACTIVE CASE
CAN SPREAD IT, AND I
