VLOG | Ep 03: Stopping tuberculosis in the community

So today I am going out with the
community team… and this is my friend Julius… who works at MSF here in Mathare. Today we’re going out with the community
team to do some really important work. The community team play a really
active role within MSF. They go spread public health
messages within the community… and I’m really happy to be getting
involved with this today. So we’re going out to do
some health promotion work… and also maybe get some samples off
people who want to be tested for TB. So let’s go have a look
and see what we get up to today. We’ve just arrived. The MSF team and
community workers are… about to head out
into the community. We’re going to distribute
patient information leaflets… and talk to the community
about TB. So it should be
pretty exciting… I think these guys always have good
fun when they do these activities. I’m really looking forward to it, so
let’s go have a look at what they do. What big things would you
like to see changing in TB? What’s the biggest
problems you can see? First of all I want to reach
as many people as possible… so the community can have
the information… and also to know where to
refer the cases… for patients who maybe have a
sense of TB… and they don’t know where to
get this care. So reaching out to them… and also telling them that
the service is for free. So I’m just back in my office,
having spent the morning… with the MSF community
health team. It was fantastic
to see the team… engage the community with so
much energy and commitment. They’re doing a wonderful job trying
to decrease stigma in the community. I hope with the work they do,
and I know they are doing it… They’re slowly, slowly breaking
down the stigma of TB. Hopefully more and more people
will present to get tested… and the fascinating thing today
was just under 20 people… asked to be tested
on the street. So we took sputum samples
on the street… and we brought them to the lab
this afternoon to get tested. In the next day or two these people will
have a result for if they’ve got TB. It’s fantastic to see
and I look forward to working with these guys
more in the future. They want to take me to a puppet
show next, which will be really fun. Hopefully I’ll get to see them do
more TB work over the coming weeks. Subtitles by the Amara.org community
